Carbon 60, also known as Buckminsterfullerene or “buckyball,” was discovered in 1985 by Harold Kroto, Richard Smalley, and Robert Curl, who later received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for this work. The molecule consists of 60 carbon atoms arranged in a spherical structure resembling a soccer ball.
